Aging Skincare Regimen: The Generational Glow

My routine is incredibly well-structured. I have done quite a bit of research on skincare products prior to utilizing them. I have done some trial and error of course. Apparently, pairing Vitamin C with SPF is the gold standard for protecting collagen and fading sun spots, which was important to me. By keeping Vitamin C separated from my peptides and retinol perfectly prevents ingredient clashing and irritation. This is why I placed the peptides and retinol in my nightly care.

I have compiled an organized skincare guide, including the regimens essential in your 40s through your 70s and beyond. There is information on each product, size of product, cost, and duration each item lasts. Remember it will slightly vary based on the individuals needs and skin type.

My Current Regimen (Age 45) Breakdown

AM Routine (Focus: Protection & Depuffing)

  • CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser: A creamy, non-foaming wash packed with ceramides and hyaluronic acid to cleanse without stripping the skin’s natural lipids. (16 oz | ~$15 | 3 months)
  • Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop: 5% L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) fades dark spots and provides antioxidant protection. Wait 10–15 minutes to allow the low-pH formula to fully absorb before applying other products. (1.18 oz | ~$23 | 2–3 months)
  • The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG: Caffeine acts as a vasoconstrictor, shrinking under-eye blood vessels to quickly diminish puffiness. (1 oz | ~$9 | 3–4 months)
  • Eucerin Age Defense Hyaluronic Acid SPF 50: Provides high UV protection while delivering extra moisture to dry skin. (1.7 oz | ~$15 | 2 months)

PM Routine (Focus: Repair, Elasticity & Cell Turnover)

  • Neutrogena Hydro Boost Micellar Water: Gently removes SPF and daily impurities.
  • The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Eye Serum: Peptides signal the skin to produce more collagen, targeting crow’s feet and structural thinning. (0.5 oz | ~$25 | 2–3 months)
  • The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + HA Face Serum: Improves skin thickness and elasticity, while Hyaluronic Acid (HA) plumps fine lines. (1 oz | ~$20 | 2 months)
  • Simply Vital Moisturizer (Retinol & HA): Retinol accelerates cellular turnover to shed pigmented cells and smooth lines. HA provides deep hydration without a heavy film. (1.69 oz | ~$25 | 1.5–2 months)
  • Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: Repairs the lip barrier overnight. (0.7 oz | ~$24 | 4–6 months)

The Science of Pairings

  • Vitamin C + SPF (Do Pair): Sunscreen blocks UV rays, while Vitamin C neutralizes any free radicals that slip through. Together, they offer ultimate collagen protection.
  • Vitamin C + Retinol (Do Not Mix): They require different pH levels to work. Mixing them neutralizes their benefits and heavily increases the risk of redness and a damaged skin barrier.
  • Vitamin C + Peptides (Do Not Mix): The acidic nature of Vitamin C can break down peptide bonds into individual amino acids, rendering your expensive anti-aging serums useless.
  • Peptides + Retinol (Do Pair): Peptides soothe and strengthen the skin barrier, which acts as a fantastic buffer against the potential dryness caused by Retinol.

Skincare for the 50s

Focus: Combating dryness and sagging from hormonal shifts.

  • Aquaphor Healing Ointment for Lips: A heavy occlusive ointment needed to completely lock moisture into thinning lips. (0.35 oz | ~$5 | 6 months)

Skincare for the 70s & Beyond

Focus: Protecting extremely fragile, thin skin that is prone to tearing. This phase requires intense lipid replacement, sealing in moisture, and eliminating harsh active acids or strong retinoids.

AM Routine

  • Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser: An ultra-mild, sulfate-free wash to protect a delicate barrier. (8 oz | ~$9 | 3 months)
  • The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10%: A very gentle peptide serum that targets facial folds without any of the irritation of stronger actives. (1 oz | ~$10 | 2 months)
  • CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30: Mineral sunscreens (zinc/titanium) sit on top of the skin and are far less irritating for highly sensitive, mature skin than chemical filters. (2.5 oz | ~$15 | 2 months)

PM Routine

  • Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser
  • The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil: Rich in essential fatty acids for deep nourishment and natural, ultra-gentle pro-Vitamin A (a non-irritating alternative to standard retinol). (1 oz | ~$11 | 3 months)
  • Vanicream Moisturizing Cream: A thick, heavy occlusive cream designed for highly sensitive skin to prevent overnight moisture loss. (16 oz | ~$14 | 4–6 months)
  • Aquaphor Healing Ointment: Applied to lips and any severely dry patches to lock in hydration. (1.75 oz | ~$6 | 6 months)

Usage Notes

  • Eye Serums: Applied in tiny quantities (a fraction of a drop per eye), allowing 0.5 to 1.0 oz bottles to last significantly longer than full-face serums.
  • Retinol: A pea-sized amount is sufficient for the entire face. Usage often starts 2–3 nights per week before progressing to daily, which extends bottle longevity.
  • SPF 50 Moisturizer: Requires generous application (roughly 1/4 teaspoon for face and neck) for full UV protection, leading to faster replacement cycles.

Why We Should Swap Out Micellar Water As Our Skin Ages

Some individuals into their late 40s are all right to utilize a product such as, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Micellar Water. It is lightweight, hydrating, and effectively removes daily impurities. However, the needs are based on the individual. So if your face is not dry after the cleanser, it is all right to continue use until around age 50. In a persons 50s and beyond, two major biological shifts occur that require a different cleansing approach:

  • Lipid Depletion: Due to hormonal changes (like a drop in estrogen), the skin produces significantly less natural oil (sebum). The skin barrier becomes highly prone to transepidermal water loss. Creamy, lotion-like cleansers (like CeraVe and La Roche-Posay) actively deposit ceramides and lipids back into the skin while washing, whereas micellar water simply lifts things away.
  • Mechanical Friction: Micellar water almost always requires wiping the face with a cotton pad. In your 60s, 70s, and 80s, the skin becomes incredibly thin, fragile, and prone to micro-tears and bruising. Switching to a creamy cleanser that you gently massage with just your fingertips eliminates that mechanical friction and protects the delicate epidermis.

When Switching to a Creamier Cleanser Try This

A quick tip: Try massaging the cleanser onto damp skin, rinsing with lukewarm (never hot) water, and then applying your serums while your face is still slightly damp. This helps lock in that extra layer of moisture before you finish with your SPF or evening moisturizer.
